You can read about the beginning of the church in Acts chapter 2. While the church or kingdom was always in the
mind of God, it did not become an earthly reality until Christ ascended to heaven. The prophets before Christ
foretold that God would set up his kingdom from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:2-3); its establishment would coincide with the
proclamation of God’s word (Isaiah 2:3); and that it would have its beginnings during the days of the Roman empire
(Daniel 2:44). Christ himself promised it would come during the lifetime of some who were present when he spoke
(Mark 9:1). The fulfillment of these promises is recorded in Acts 2, when the apostles, during the days of Roman
rule, preached the gospel in Jerusalem, emphatically declaring that Jesus had ascended to heaven to receive his
kingdom (Acts 2:32-36; cf. Daniel 7:13-14). From that point on, the church is always spoken of as a present reality
(see Acts 2:47). The time for the beginning of the church of Christ was approximately A. D. 30; the place was
Jerusalem.
